My gear shifter on my 98 F-150 is no longer aligned with the gears.Everything is shifted to the left by 1. Everything works fine other than that! Can someone tell me how to fix this and make it all aligned again? Thanks.
Is it just the indicator on the dash that isn't aligned right?
If you remove the covers on the steering column you'll see a small cable that goes from the shifter to the indicator on the dash. See if the bracket that holds the cable to the column is broken. It's somewhat common.
If it's actually your shifter that's the problem, ie if you pull the shift lever the whole way to the bottom and it's actually in second gear but the indicator says 1st, then you may have a problem with the cable going to the transmission.

I bought a $21 dollar part at the local Ford store. One of the parts guys started telling me what to take off to do the job. I about died hearing what had to be done, however, I went home and started taking it apart. The plastic pc that screws into the column is what broke.
I took off about everything on the front dash following a Hayes book. The only confusing part was my light switch, how to take that off. I pried the cover off only to re-read the Hayes book indicating this doesnt come off. Whoever designed this switch take off was on something. I got it off so I could pull the main front panel. Then I took off the glass protecting over the instrument panel. Connecting the part was okay. Directions to take off all the parts were all over from 3 different people. I got it done and now the gear selector works again.
I may need to buy a new light switch if the cover comes off?
Thanks to both of you for replying! I will start with the steering column and see if that piece is broken. I guess I'll need to buy the Hayes book that's referred to since I don't already have one. I hope it's not the cable to the transimssion...that doesn't sound good. I'm curious though, because about 2 or 3 days before it started this, I had to do a quick 3 point turn and when I went into revers, it hit kinda hard...I guess I had'nt realized it wasnt in gear before accelerating. But, the shifter issue didn't start until a few days later. Everything seems fine...just off by one on the column. I'll start with the column first. Thanks!
