Window Channel: Replacing

I have a 1982 F-100 and I need to replace the window channeling.

I've never done a job like this; can anyone give me some tips?

Does anyone know of any kits out there to do it? I noticed JC Whitney carries a kit....any experience with them?

If yours are as dry rotted as mine were in my 86' there is no easy way. I have never done it before and it took me about 3 hours to do my driver side. I still have not done the passenger side yet, waiting for cooler weather. I did learn alot trying to do it though. The hardest part was getting the old channel out because it kept breaking apart. I am sure a bodyshop has a special tool to do it with that makes it really easy. I ordered mine from JCwhittney and after I got the one side in it did cut down on wind noise and the window works a little smoother with less play. The way I did it was take the door panel inside off and loosen the window guides, pull the old stuff out and start with one side and work your way around just pushing the new stuff into place. If anyone knows better I will be listening too. Dan

Dan,

Thanks for the info, especially about the time it takes and the need to wait and do it in cool weather (I'm in S.C.).

There is almost none of the original channel left, so the time spent in replacing it will be worth while.

Steve

Hey Dogdecur, just wanted to let you know that I put in the other window channel last weekend and it only took about 1.5 hours from start to finish. I guess I remembered all the stuff that gave me trouble on the other side. I do have to say that it did improve the noise on the inside, it is not a lexus but it is alot quieter. Good luck with yours. Dan

I've got an '84 F150 that I did this on a few years ago. I had no problems with it. The old channeling was rotted so I just chipped it all out (use a screw driver and pry it out). It is getting thrown away anyways so I didnt care if it was in a million pieces. Then like said before I took the door panel off and started sliding the channeling around. I have found before that when trying to slide foam rubber over metal (like handlebars and window channeling) it is MUCH easier if you use a little bit of liquid soap. It gives a little bit of slip and once dries you will never know it was there. Hope it works for you

I have to do this too and was wondering where did you get them? If they are from JC Whitney I noticed there were more than a couple to choose from. Which ones did you use? Thanks

Did my driver's side this weekend. Went pretty well....the soap trick helped a lot (I did try without it, but quickly added some suds...thanks AggieFord84!). Dan, I thought it was suppose to be cool in SC in October, but it was so hot, I could only tackle one side. Now I know what you meant about waiting for cooler weather!

Made a big difference in the cab! Driver's window is so quiet that I can now hear the wind rushing through the passenger window. Also had a chance to clean out 20 years worth of pine needles, bugs and other stuff from the inside bottom of the door...hit all moving parts with some grease and everything runs slick now.

I think I'll wait until November when it cools down a bit more.

Once again, thanks for the tips.

Steve
