I now own a 1985 F-250 4x4 long bed extended cab. It has a 460 and a 3 speed automatic tranny. I want to put lockers or something similar in the front and the rear axle. Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks.

If you're iffy on whether to get a locker in the front or the rear, go with a Detroit Tru-Trac in both. It is a limited Slip Locker which acts like a full time locker in 4 Low or under extreme pedal mashing... I have on in my front and I love it, expecially it's road manners. Make sure you know what you want though, all lockers come with a good price, even the cheap ones. Cheap ones are expensive once you have to replace or rebuild them every so often, hint hint. If you choose anything with Detroit in front of it, you'll be more than happy.

I've got a detroit locker in a 9 in under my 65 mustang. There's over 400 hp up front so I felt like I needed to tie the rear wheels together. It hooks up real strong BUT when under power on a corner, it jerks and tries to lock up instead of allowing one wheel to rotate faster than the other. I imagine on a slick road, the car would not want to turn. You can feel the car wanting to go straight when this condition happpens. In a 4wd, you might want to drive when the roads are slick or icy and I think that as long as you are going straight, the locker would be nice, but in a corner.... I have run limited slips in the rear for years with no problems. Maybe some of the guys from the 'frozen north' can give you more insight on the lockers. This is just my opinion.
cutts, like i told ya since your on a budget...jus weld the spiders, there arent many lockers for the 10.25 sterling, but if you have the $$$$ go with the detroit. Next time we're in town ill let you take mine for a ride so you can feel what a linlcon locked rear drives like. As for the front, leave it open..with 38's and the way you drive youll prolly break something anyway....a locker up there is a bigger invitation to snap that TTB dana 50. The rear locker and 38's will get you farther than your 93 would go in 2wd
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 01:36 AM (EST)]If your a good welder, you use the right rod (7018 works nicely), and you know where to weld, and dont get the gears/carrier too hot, a licoln locker is just as strong as a spool. All ya got to do is weld the spiders together, then weld the gears to the carrier, the main thing is DONT GET IT TOO HOT, you gotta let it cool after each pass. Otherwise you could weaken the parts. oh ya, make sure you clean the gears/carrier before you weld and make sure you clean up any spatter
