hello guys i was change my spark plug wires on my 96 explorer and when i started it up the engine shakes and sounds like it;s miss fireing this is the first time i have change my spark plug wires on this truck . and also it;s giveing a weird smell like paint or something along them lines .. i would like to know what i did rong and what u all think is the problum thanks alot ...
Yup, crossed plug wires will make it run and smell like crap. Been there, now I mark the module AND change them one at a time. Also make sure the wires are on the plugs all the way.
In addition to wrong firing order and unsecure connections, after that many years, I would replace the plug wires. It might be that one broke during the tug-o-war.
Most likely, you have a couple of wires crossed. Another thing to consider is checking the gap on the plugs before putting them in. Some people think that they are gapped correctly out of the box, but this is not always the case.
thanks alot for all your help i had 4and 5 crossed and found it on axadent . i new it was on the 4-5-6 side of the motor because when i started this hole this i did plug for plug 1-2 and 3 and then when i started the other sided i started pulling all the plugs out leveing the top on no thinking like a ediot.. but thanks agian i would of spent some money that i did not have to thanks again ..
A few notes on plugs (from at least one bad experience and many good ones). Some of these are repeated above.
1) buy a Haynes/Chilton manual so you have the cylinder/coil match
2) blow the bits crap out the area before removing plugs
3) change the wires with the plugs (it's only $30-$40 for decent wires)
4) buy Motorcraft (dealer) plugs or highest-end aftermarket plugs
5) change one at a time if in doubt
6) don't forget the di-electric compound on the boots and coil connectors
7) seat the plugs by hand (gently) so as not to cross thread them
8) do not over tighten!
9) gap them yourself even if they come "pre-gapped"
