My 86 Ranger's oil gauge has been doing something strange. Can someone help. (Note: Engine has 260K miles. )
When starting the engine first thing in the morning the oil pressure gauge is high. After warming up it runs in the middle section of the qauge. If I get it above 65 miles per hour the oil gauge registers on the low end of normal, almost in the low range of the gauge. When
slowing down the gauge returns to the middle of the gauge again. The
engine runs fine, I do not hear any knocking and there is no over-heating. I replaced the oil pressure sensor 4 years ago.
who knows, if your really worried about it install a mechanical gauge, i wouldnt worry about if it has good power and dont run hot or make noise, no big deal really
Iv never been a fan of stock oil or temp gauges......there simply just not accurate or reliable..I installed a set of 4 gauges in my truck amp, volt, oil, temp and mounted them directly in the dash 2 on each side, it was cheap (like $60 with "t" fittings and all, i use the stock gauges aswell as the mechanicle gauges..id recomend them to everyone..

When the oil is cold it is sluggish and will read higher pressures, as it warms it gets thinner, hence lower pressure. Now at higher rpms, like on the highway you are probably filling the heads with oil and it is not draining back real quick, and you will get lower pressures due to less oil in the pan.
