Can the heater core be removed without removing the dash? My truck has A/C, looked behind the glove box, could not tell if it could be done without getting the dash out of the way.
Should not be a problem. I assume you have a 1991 F250, from your Sig.
Should be the same as my 1994 F350, but I'll check....
For the 1994 -
Remove the glove compartment (pull it right out) and behind that is a plastic cover.
Remove the plastic cover (7 screws).
From there, just unclamp the hoses from the engine compartmanet, and pull it out.
Be sure to drain the coolant to a level BELOW the heater core and those hoses.
Give me a second, and I'll double check the 1994 and the 1991 are the same...(got both parked in my driveway).
Yes you just need to remove the glovebox and get that out of the way.
The cover has about 7 screws holding it on. Remove the wiring harnes there (if equiped) and tuck that out of the way.
You should NOT have to remove the dash to change the heater core.
Oh, and BTW the trucks I have changed the heater cores on had AC as well. Not an issue, no need to go near the lines.
Pain in the A** to get that plastic cover off and out of the area before gettign to the heater core.
man, i have nothing to do with this other than i am sooo impressed with the help ironpants gave rbdutton. AWESOME!! totally going out of the way and beyond.
i just did mine in a 92 and he is right, my abs module was behind the glove compartment and had to be removed, then there are i believe 6...7mm screws holding the cover on, then you get to your heater core. make sure you have a good swivel. you may also have to disconnect a few vacuum lines. Only word of caution, there are a few sharp plastic alignment dowels, used to line up that cover. make sure you dont puncture the heater core on these. the actual removal isnt bad but you have to finingle with it a tad.
I like to think of this website as "where the book leaves off and you still need to go further". First time I used that line was taking apart my transfer case.
But really, I have received way more help then I have ever given on this site. So really, I'll redirect the thanks to everyone on the website.

BTW - rbdutton - did you get the heater core changed out?
i changed out my heater core last week, didn't take long. that plastic cover needs to be sealed so air from the heater does not leak out. i put a little bull on the cover before reinstalling. i also put an external water cut off valve under the hood. in the summer when you want cold a/c you can turn the hot water off externally and not count on the ford a/c door doing it for you. your a/c will be a lot colder that way. i also wrapped my new $30.00 mexican heater core with some dum-dum, because it was a little smaller than the original ford core, and i did not want it to rattle around.

Haven't had a chance to work on it yet. Had a 500 mile road trip for work yesterday, plus, it is -15 here at night. Have to wait for the weekend so I can get it inside someplace to work on it. I really appreciate the information though. When someone has a problem or question on this forum, everyone comes through. Thanks.
If your changing the heater core due to lack of heat, remove hoses and back flush it before removing to ensure that it is not just pluged up. Also check the cable operated blend door is closing properly both ways. If mice are a problem check inside the fan chamber for nests etc.
