'99 isn't a bad year for the PSD, it is the first year they came out with the Super Duty, they also have made some improvements on the engine since '99, bigger turbo, I think bigger injectors, and a few other things I can't remember. I have an early '99, build date of 10/98, and haven't had any problems with it except for very minor things that the previous owner neglected. I love my truck, pulls like a tractor and still comfortable to ride in and enjoyable to drive! If the truck you are looking at is what you want and within your price range, I wouldn't think twice about it, get it!!

I also have an early 99, build date of 12/98. I have the same feelings about my truck as farmboy, but have had two injectors go out as well as an IDM. I think this was due to the fuel quality where i was previasly living (island in southeast alaska), and haven't had any serious problems since the 90,000 mile mark. I now have 150,000, and it still drives/pulls like a champ, that is ofcourse if I hadn't run over a 40 foot log hidden under a snowbank and bent my tierod, but that's a whole other story. My two cents anyway

I bought a 99 about about a year ago and haven't had any issues. Lot's of power, solid truck, the only thing I had to do was replace the batteries.

99.5 & 2000. They have the highest rated hp and still have fordged rods. Oct 2000 is when they went to PM rods. This is only a factor for big hp mods.

I bought my 99.5 new. I've had very few problems. It has never left me stranded. I plan on keeping this truck for many more years, 143000 miles. How ever the wife has been looking at new suv.

My 99 has been the best truck I have ever owned and will be in the family for many years to come. Don't hesitate...

Actually I believe they stopped using forged rods after 2001

Oct 16 is what I was told as last engine production date with forged rods. If any made it into 2001 production trucks I don't know.

I have a 99, build date 2/99, has 163k I bought it with 150k. It runs smooth & starts
fine, & doesn't burn oil, it does leak it tho, not much. The engine is no comparison
to a cummins, but it gets me to where I desire to go.

I bought my 99.5 9 months ago with 140,000 on it, it now has 160,000 and still runs strong. My only regret is getting an auto instead of a manual this time. I had a 2000 manual with a 7.3L before this truck and the manual felt more like it had a 350 gasser under the hood rather than a diesel.

They were delivering the ordered 01' model in june of 00' so there is 3-4 months that they were put in with the forged rods.

Just curious, what do you mean - no comparison to a Cummins?

Mileage Questions

Greetings,
I am new to FTE and excited to find it. I posted in the new members area , read the FAQ's and some posts.

My first question has to do with mileage. I just bought a '99 PSD short bed with a Leer cap. (my first diesel) It has 100K on it. Through info on this site I have determined that I have a 3.73 rearend and it has a 4 speed auto trans.

On my first long trip (600 miles) I got 15.75 MPG on the highway, empty. In town here I get about 12-13. I expected a little better. I changed the oil & filter, Air & fuel filters and flushed the radiator. The air filter I removed was a K&N, but I don't have the oil to clean it so I replaced it with a NAPA. I also inflated the tires to just below the max 65psi from 35psi. None of this produced any mpg increase.

Am I getting what I should or is there something else I could do?

Thanks,
Ed
