I have an 85 f-250 with a 351w A/C 2wd. The other day, right after starting the truck I noticed smoke coming from the pas side heater vent. this was smoke not steam, it had a slight electrical smell to it. The heater was'nt on at the time, and it didn't last long.Everything still works. It has a new heater core (6 mos old).Does anyone have any Ideas. Thanks Marty
Could be the blower motor failing, since you said it smells electrical or that fan motor ballast.
I had leaves get inside of my blower housing and they were touching that ballast or whatever it is and it set the leaves on fire in side the housing and filled the truck with leaf smoke while going down the road. Luckily it just flashed up and went out by itself.
Superdave may be on the right track. There are little resistance coils that are used for the different speeds of the fan motor. When it is on low, that coil gets red hot. That's why it's in the air stream-to keep it somewhat cool. If a leaf got against it, it would definitely smoke for a bit.
Had same problem with my '81. Easy fix. Remove blower-motor. Look down toward where the fender and firewall are and see small opening. That is the fresh-air duct and how leaves enter the blower compartment. I cut a 1/4" mesh piece of screening material to a 'press-fit' and installed it in that opening. No more leaves/smoke/burning smell. It was sure nice not to have to bail-out of the truck anymore at red-lights/stop signs/along side of the road.....
