Oil change info request.

I have recently purchased a 2001 PS 7.3L and am looking for some advice.

I bought my '01 from my brother in law that did not perform his own maint., just took truck to the dealer. I plan on doing my own oil changes and have some questions.

The service records seem to indicate the dealer used Delo due to the line item delopk1799. Does this mean they used Delo or something else? If it is Delo, can I use Rotella? Rotella is easy to find and Delo has not been so easy.

Do I need to use the Motorcraft oil filter or can I use Fram, Wix, Purolator or something else?

Should I replace the fuel filter ever oil change or every other oil change?

Should I do a 3000, 5000 or 7000 mile oil change? Truck will sit most of the time and be used for pulling a TT in the spring to fall.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I am new to Diesel and this site. I have been reading alot of the posts and responses and have found this a great place for information and value any responses.

Here is what Ford says:

1. For any towing at temps above 50* F, use 15w-40 oil API rated at least CH-4. CI-4 is the new, improved rating and it is even better. So CI-4 is OK too.

2. Towing is "severe" service and requires 3000 miles oil change intervals. 5000 miles otherwise.

3. Replace the fuel filter every 15,000 miles.

4. Replace tranny fluid every 30,000 miles. You might want to shorten this because of all of your towing. Many people who tow follow a 15,000 miles tranny fluid change interval.

As far as what brand of filter, Ford says anything that meets Ford specs is OK. That is just about everything being sold right now. Lots of differing opinions on this. They go from $2.50 to $20 each. Your money, your choice.

Ditto oil. "Which oil to use" is the #1 fight starting question on these boards. It goes from $1 to $6 qt. Your money, your choice.

If the truck will truly sit all winter, you will want to put some biocide in the tank to keep from turning the diesel tank into a greenhouse. Diesel loves water. Algae love water. You do the math. Some fuel stabilizer like Sta-Bil is worth considering as well.
