Transmission Woes
Began feeling the clutch tickle the bottom of my foot and discovered that my flywheel was coming apart.
My local dealer wanted $1200 for just the flywheel and it is a weird one. 2 pieces with springs in it. You can get the whole kit, clutch, flywheel and throw out bearing between $500-$700 at NAPA or O'Riellys. And they will have a solid steel flywheel.
Upon taking the transmission out, I discovered that the the tail casing was cracked completely apart about 3 inches behind the cross member support. So, nothing but the shaft was supporting my transfer case. Ford and 2 transmission shops told me it was not uncommon. Down side to all that torque I guess.
Tail casing, $190. While I have it apart might as well replace bearings and sync rings. Another $300. Oh yeah, rear main seal, $22.50 and paying a tran shop to press the bearings in place for me, $80.
Truck has 170k on it and I'm not complaining, I am farily hard on it. Junk yard offered me a transmission for $1000, but I think I'd rather put $1,800 in mine and keep it. What'd ya think?
