I have a 2000 single cab with a four banger. It's great for long trips and is great on gas compared to the bigger trucks. Good for hauling very light trailers but nothing too big. If you're intrested in a good get around gas saving ranger then this is a good buy!
I currently have a 4 popping Ranger. It's a nice little truck, but I refuse to ever buy another truck with anything less than a V6 again. Definitely go with the 4.0L. The 3.0 is underpowered and hardly gets any better mileage than the 4.0.
That's the trade-off, Power or Economy. I was looking for transport, light hauling and a tow-er for a small sailboat. Got a '98 regular cab w/5-speed & 2WD. The '98 is the 1st yr. for a new suspension - more car like, and the cab is 4" bigger (longer) than the '97. Also 1st yr for 2.5 motor. The penalty for weight is fuel economy. The X-cab is about 200lbs heavier than the reg cab - plus all the stuff that gets lost back there! I'm 6'2" & 210lb and just fit. But I do fit and the truck is really comfortable for me. Just drove it 1200 miles and averaged around 28mpg. BUT I'd really like to try that 4.0 ltr. V6 sometime! Or the new Mustang. Or.......
Hope this helps some, good luck.
