i can not get the steering wheel off of my 86 f-250 to fix the broken piece between the key and ignition rod. Right now i start the truck with a pair of pliers on top of the colum!! Any ideas on how to fix it and get the wheel off? thanks
I figure you have the horn pad off already - if not remove the two screws from the back side of the wheel spokes. Unplug the electrical connections.
Then remove the large nut in the center, use a wheel puller - thread two appropriate bolts into the small holes and use a wrench/ratchet on the puller. Slides right off.
To get the column collar off you may be in for some tedious work - don't get impatient. This should get you started.
thanks when i get a round to it i'll go get one. i have everything done: horn pad wires center nut and the bugger didn't pull off so i apreciate the help
Use two pieces of masking tape to mark the position of the wheel before pulling it. Attach one to the wheel, and line the other up on the column, in line with the piece on the wheel. When reinstalling the wheel, the tape pieces will help you line it back up correctly. Also, while you can get a loaner for free, should you want to purchase a puller, you can get one fairly cheaply (I paid $7 for mine).
