I am a newbie. I just bought a 94 F250 4WD IDI Turbo Diesel 134K. The clutch is a bear and gets old real fast when driving in the city. I am considering putting on the LUK solid mass flywheel conversion. I have read as many threads as I could and know that I will hear "gear rollover" noise. I thought it would be useful to everyone to get all the opinions, comments and reviews in one place. So, has the conversion caused you joy or headaches?
i did the smf conversion a couple a months ago....clutch feels great, less pedal effort and your future clutch replacements will be way cheaper...yes after mine i did get the gear roll over noise or "lagging" in the transmission when i am at ilde in any gear and on take off but is fine when goin down the road...
I did this conversion for a friend's father, and never really noticed a change, but he was tickled with it. He came up to me and asked in a voice that made you cringe what I had done to his truck, then let me off the hook by telling me it had more power and get up and go.
gear noise?? does the noise come from the transmission, could it sound like a throwout bearing. does it come and go? we need an audio capability on this forum--just kidding.
yes gear noise...from the tranny....after i did my smf conversion...the shop here called it lagging....and said it was normal...but dont quote me on that....i have the noise but no troubles with the clutch or tranny
do you mean the low end "growl" as i call it, i did a clutch for a buddy, and i had never heard a zf-5 growl like that, not a bad growl, but it was only in first gear taking off at engine idle speeds. i didn't notice it before i put the clutch in."did drive it, but with a slipping clutch and no p.s. but the clutch was much lighter to push and seemed like a very solid investment for 575.00!! i did have to adjust the clutch linkage "like on every ford i have ever worked on" and now the clutch engages at 1/2 of pedal travel instead of all the way to the floor. it works real good, you we have all heard the powerstroke 6-speed growl in low gear.. its not to that extent though. and like shadowcaster said, "a little gear noise never hurt nobody" i would actually try adjusting the clutch linkage if you think it is engaging too late(like almost to the floor) it seems like it feels lighter pedal when they are adjusted right. and you only have to push it like not even 1/2 the way to the floor, its nice!!
I did this conversion on my 94 Super Duty w/ PS flat bed wrecker. The only draw back is the lighter fly wheel does not allow me to creep as slow as the dual mass did. After replacing countless bushing and two pedal asemblies I wish I had done it sooner. My shop services about 200 F-250s ,350s and 450s for Halliburton Energy corp . We started installing the LUK setup in their vehicles about 2 years ago. This setup has saved them a lot of money on repairs and down time.
