Just wanted to post a thought and a question. I'm stuck here in mid winter in the frozen state of Wisconsin and I was wondering if anyone else is having the winter blues and having a hard time getting out to get there "babys" ready to be on the road this comming spring? I know that I have a "to do list" that is miles and miles long, but I just can't seem to find the urge to get out there in the cold (semi-cold with a turbo heater) and get moving on things........

Monk,
I feel your pain, but I prefer to see the glass as half-full. I moved to northern New Hampshire a little over six years ago from sunny Florida. It was an adjustment to say the least. The only thing that kept me from working on my projects all year round in Florida was the HEAT, although my last garage down there was air-conditioned! Now that I've adjusted to the northern winters I find that taking the winter off is not so bad. It gives me plenty of planning time, getting back to work on my truck in the the spring is even more pleasurable, and I don't experience burn out either!
Monk,
I think I've got the opposite problem. The only thing I look forward to this time of year is working on the Effie. It's driving to work everyday in the dark on the salt covered, sloppy, snowy roads. Working in a building with no windows, and then returning home at night, in the dark, on the same crummy roads that bums me out. Freezing my butt off in my garage a few nights a week is about the only satisfaction that I get this time of year.
You mean you can't sneak small parts into the house to work on them?
At the moment I'm too busy keeping other rigs running to even get to my old truck. Catalogs, dream, plan, spend time on the boards reading what other guys are doing and have done. Before you know it the ice will melt. Hang in there!
Well I look forward to the winter months, only because I get more time to do what I want. It seems the family’s plans in the winter don’t require me as much as the summer. Summertime plans just seem to require me to be involved more. Not that I mind at all, that’s what life’s all about (family). But I do enjoy my me time in the winter, just fire up the wood stove and I’m all set for a days work on the old truck. Got my TV and my mini frig. in the garage. Nothing better, a little football, refreshments, and my old truck.
NOW THAS LIVING, (to me)
Hang in there
Mike
A lot of good thoughts in the posts - including yours. Sometimes I find it hard to get going on projects just because the weather is so crappy. I'm finishing some work on the computer now, and outside it's totally overcast, dark gray, drizzling, and chilly (40s). I grew up in Wisconsin and I'd almost rather have it 0 degrees and snowing than this southwest Ohio dreary weather we get for weeks on end.
On the other hand, Vern's half full glass is a great way to look at it.
- Can't do much of anything outside in this weather, so I get free time to do stuff in the garage.
- Got the Christmas lights down just before the latest monsoon.
- An most important of all, THE SUMP PUMP IS STILL WORKING!
Ahhh, life is good!
One of my sons got me this sign for Christmas. He said he was laughing so hard he could hardly pay for it. I use the word all the time (in a nice way) to tell family and friends (and myself) that they need to take a ride on the happy side of life for a while. You're not alone, I think a lot of us find it harder to get going when it's cold (or hot) and the weather is getting us down. All I have to do now is look up from the computer, and I get a reminder of my son and a good laugh to boot!
My truck has about a foot of snow on it and around it. I've mostly been doing research for the truck since you can't do much when with windchill it's -45'C
The winter is getting me down as well. I find myself dreaming and flipping through catalogs every night, running out to the garage in my stocking feet to measure something, then right back inside where it's warm.
This is the last winter I am going to torture myself though. Insulation and heat for the garage is a must do project this summer. Now if I can just keep my wife's snow covered car from melting all over the garage floor, we'll be in business.
well im glad to see that I am not the only one that is suffering from the no truck season lol.... well guys (and girls) I guess we just hang in there for another month and a half or so and we all should but in good shape for the next year....thanks for the great comments and stuff.....This is one of the reasons that I like hangin out here, most have been through the same stuff or are going through it.....
I know what ya mean. My garage is insulated to R20 but up here in the great white north, it can get pretty darned cold. My first winter, I had to work out there....plug in the heater about 2 hours before you want to do anything and by then it's about 55 degrees F which isn't bad for working, but the old electrical meter is just spinning.
These past few winters I've been able to schedule projects that could be done in my basement shop, where it's nice and warm.....First winter P & P the heads and intake. This winter the famous Fontiac grille....
Course, a little time away from the truck lets you replenish the bank account or gather parts for spring....
You boys know my policy about the cold. Can't take it. Below 60 and I'm inside with a book. The desert has been cruel to we dwellers in this barren place... cold, rain, some snow (a dusting). It was supposed to hit 75 today and didn't. Tomorrow it drops down again below 60... oh woe is me. Another 2 months of this could drive a guy crazy.
Like Tim, I'm gonna sneak that leaking primary into the house and get it right. Don't know when I'll get to re-install. hating winter, himmelberg
Man.. I remember Boston winters.. That one of the Reason I moved to Redding, Ca.. My Blues is all the plans and a full shop with heat and AC.. But no money to spare on my truck .. So even with all the Right stuff.. Something always screws it up
My hats off to you guys in the states where the temps fall below 45 degress (above zero) and it snows. My only complaint is that my garage is small and has a wooden floor, which makes it difficult to use a floor jack, etc.
