Here's the situation I'm in. Let me know what you guys think. I have an Audiophile system in my truck. I sounds great for factory but it isn't quite as loud basswise or soundwise for my taste. First I changed out the head unit with a pioneer 7600 cd player. With the controls on that cd player, it made a world of differnece with the door speakers. I was going to buy a custom 10" box from www.musicmooseaudio.com but thought why buy a new box when I already have a perfectly good one. Has anyone ever just replaced the factory 8" sub with another 8" sub and amp? If so, what type of sub did you use because I'm researching 8" subs and the mounting dept is going to be an issue.
Pioneer has a sub which is made for a shallow instalation. I think the general depth needed for subs is 5 inches, these ones from Pioneer are 4 inches. They only come in 12" though.
How many total speakers come with the audiophile package anyhow?
The stock sub box seems pretty sturdy but there are two problems with it.....volume and depth. The depth of the enclosure will probably not facilitate a good quality 8" sub(unless it is really low profile). The other problem is volume. Just because a sub can be mounted in a box that is 0.25 cuft, it does not mean it will sound that good. If you really want a sub to hit the lower notes, you should probably get or build a sub box with more volume. This sound like what you are looking for. I ordered a Proboxrocks. I am waiting for it to arrive and it should have an internal volume of 1cuft(proted box). That is pretty good size and only occupies one side of the seat. It might a bit on the small size for a ported box but I can always seal up the port and make it sealed. It also allows for 1 10" sub. This allows more choice especially with a mounting depth of 5.5". After I get it and it is installed, I will post my expereinces with it. Try www.proboxrock.com
I have a stx scaband I installed the probox in my truck and it sounds very good. I had to make some internal mods for the 10" alpine sub to fit ( so check dimentions first). I am running my system with two alpine amps. One 4 channel for the four alpine 5X7" door speakers and one 2 channel bridged for the 10"sub. I mounted the two amps under the small rear side seat (had to remove jack and braket).
