Hello, I am new to this sight and have a question. I own a 1985 f250 four wheel drive with a 460 motor. I am told it has a c6 transmission. The transmission went out of it and I need to replace it. Is there a difference in these trannies? Do I have to find one for a 460- motor and also does the four wheel drive make it a different tranny. Any help would be great. I also would like to know if it is possible for an individual to rebuild his own tranny? Thanks alot.
You would definately need a C6 from another 460 big block, as none of the other engines with this transmission will swap out. You will also need one from a 4x4 unless you swap your tail cone over from your old trans to the new one, which i belive is possible..but i don't know how difficult.
As for the rebuild on your own, if you are capable then yes, they sell video instruction guides telling you how to do it..if you aren't its best left to a shop to handle.

Good luck
The only other motors that will share are the 351 M-400M motors from the late 70's and early 80's. C6's are easy and cheap to rebuild, you may be well served to go and ask some of the private, not chain, stores about the price if you are not inclined to do it yourself. My dad got his done for $300 a few years ago, and had it installed as well.

I agree, if you are planning on keeping this truck for any length of time get it rebuilt. C4s and C6s are fairly cheap to rebuild. It will cost about the same as buying a used one (unless you are getting a really good deal) and you know you have a like new tranni, as opposed to what the guy in the greasy hat at the salvage yard told you.
