If you take Lipitor an Hour or two before going to bed it not only works better, but you'll have less muscle pain. Taking it in the morning can really make you hurt, my doctor did not know this and neither did the pharmacy! Also see if your doctor will half your dosage and then up it later on.
If you can handle it, Niacin is supposed to work even better than the (insert type of)statin drugs. The reaction people commonly have to niacin is getting rather flush (red face, feeling hot).
There seems to be a growing consensus that serum cholesterol levels are not tied to diet as it once was thought. It seems to be more related to heredity, activity and stress. I got ya beat at 380, by the way. I expect to explode at any moment. It won't be pretty.
Have to try my Lipitor, as my wife calls it ripitor, in the evenings. I have been taking it for 2 years and havent had the muscle pains that other do get. Unfortunally that is one of the untoward side effects of the medication. There are others out there so if diet, excersie, garlic ect wont work you could look at different medications avaliable. The key here is to do something, dont want to be a statics.
If you have muscle pain from the pills get in touch with your doctor its not a good thing and is a sign of side effects that may damage your liver. SEE YOUR DOCTOR ASAP>
I have been on Lipitor for ~5 years with nothing but good effects. No muscle pain unless I overdo at something. I can't take it on an empty stomach tho. In my case the cholesterol and lipid levels were an early indicator of diabetes. If your mother (or her mother) had diabetes you most likely will get it also since it is inherited from your mother. Men do not pass it to their children. If you have family history the earlier you start watching your diet and cut out all sugar (diet pop etc only) the better. There are some great sugar substitutes nowadays, Nutrasweet and Splenda. Oatmeal is great for cholesterol, with the slow cook stuff better than quick oats. I eat a big bowl (1 cup dry) for breakfast every day.
Eric is right about the side effects of muscle pain, if your experiencing them, see your doctor. I also heard about a new procedure for checking C-reactive protein on NPR radio last week where, by doing an inexpensive blood test they can treat you with certain statin drugs which in tests, are proving to be effective at controlling cholesterol build up in the arteries. Here's the link:
I did for the first 2 weeks take a low dose then the second week went to the full dose of medication. I am on something fairly new called Vytorin. I have been taking it at night but will try it closer to bedtime. I guess I will try and step up the exercize more too..... My muscle aches are very slight but I will watch it very closely...
Recently my triglicerides (?sp) were off the charts, but my ldl and hdl's were high but acceptable. I started exercising 3 hours a week and went on the south beach diet and they came down SUBSTANTIALLY!!! Have also lost close to 30 pounds in a little over 3 months.
I am 37 and play wallyball 3x a week for at least 1.5 hour a session. I am in the right weight range for my height. This is why I am suprised at my Cholesteral numbers ( they were good 2 years ago). I do drink too much pop though about 6 cans a day maybe this is not helping either. Anyway I could exersize more but am just kinda bummed out about it.... I have cut my diet pretty good but have not cut the pop yet.......
What kind of "pop" are you drinking 6 cans a day?
If it's not a diet version, maybe you should switch to diet...I know the taste takes some getting used to, but if it helps, it'll be worth it.
Also...even though you play 1.5 hours of Walleyball 3x a week, it's a NON-aerobic sport - meaning you start/stop too much to keep your heart rate in your "aerobic training zone"...not that I'm suggesting you were aspiring to do that. It's like racketball or tennis...just doesn't have the aerobic (or cardio) benefits of stationary bike or treadmil, swimming, or jogging outside. Walleyball IS a blast though!

Definitely a workout! And it will burn calories for sure...just not as efficiently as some other cardio sports as mentioned. But, hey...those other things aren't near as fun, I know. Maybe try mixing it up a little - maybe squeeze in a little time on the Lifecycle on "hill routine" for 15-20 minutes while catching up on CNN. There's a lot of different ways to sneak in some variety in your routine and help bring those cholesterol numbers down. Best of Luck
I prefer the natural way first if I can. Things like oatmeal, exercise, good diet, and you can go to a health food store or vitamin store and get things like "policosanol", which is what I take. Natural stuff is better than drugs. All drugs warn about side affects of one kind or another. I am 58 and mine is usually a little high. It used to be very high before I changed a few things in my diet. Less buttered bagels and more fish etc. Go out and walk. Buy a treadmill, or chase your significant other. Try it, it works. Good luck and good health to you.
