hey guys, i was doing a couple powerslides a while back and i finally hit a curb and bent my rear axel. not too servere but im replacing it this week before i start on my heads. anyone changed it out on a 2wd shorty? ive never been into a rear end before so im kind of lost. ive seen some have clips that hold the axel from the inside of the diff. are our aeros the same? ive been told ill need to replace the bearing also. so does anyone have a bit of advice before i try and tear into this thing? thanks
You have to loosen a retaining bolt inside the differential. Then a round rod about 3/4" in diameter can be pulled out of the way so the axle can be pushed inward. The head on this bolt is SAE, not metric, so be careful. Then you can remove the clip. Once the clip is gone, you can pull the axle out. Then, use the slide hammer to pull the bearing and the seal together. The new bearing and seal should be a piece of cake after that. They're just standard bearing and oil seal, nothing special.
There were 2 different rear ends used on Aerostars. A Dana 30 and a 7.5" Ford. I think it was AWD and 2WD that these were different. the 7.5" was in the AWD? I'm going by very distant memory on this, but just be careful as the axles may be different.

Are you certain its the axle that is bent and not just the wheel? Doesn't take much side force to bend a wheel rim. Might check first before pulling that axle.
