Welp after putting on two starters and almost a third I stopped and took a look at my flywheel, the teeth are shaped like this ^. Never replaced a flywheel in my life being only 18 and not having the money to put it in the shop I figured it was a good time to learn how. I got a 79 f250 with 351m/np435/np205, while I am down there I am going to throw a clutch kit on. When doing this job I should start by taking off the rear driveshaft, then the starter, then drop transfer case, then pull off crossmember then take off tranny. then take off the bellhousing. Then put flywheel and clutch kit in. the repeat in reverse order. Will I need any special tools when doing this? Is this the right order to do this? Anyone know a site that has some pics of this? thank y'all very much
I just put a flywheel and clutch kit in my 80 f150. It was real easy. You will want to put a new pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft. Also, you will need a cluth alignment tool. It will sometimes come with the kit. Put the flywheel (make sure it's torqued to specs) and new pilot bearing on, then put the clutch up to the flywheel, put the clutch alignment tool into the clutch and anchor it into the pilot bearing. Now put the pressure plate up the flywheel and bolt it on and torque it to specs. When you are all done bolting the pressure plate on, you should just be able to pull out the alignment tool with minimal effort. If not, unbolt the pressure plate and do it again. Do it until it is right or you will burn your clutch up fast. Anyhow then just bolt it back up and you're ready to go. Never worked on a 4wheel drive vehicle but I imagine the steps would be: rear driveshaft, front driveshaft, transfer case, transmission. BTW get yourself a Haynes manual. It's worth every penny for that kind of a job. Great pics. I tried to copy some but my scanner sucks. Just go to your local Ford dealership and ask for a picture. They will have some they can pull up on the computer. Also, normally a flywheel or flexplate will wear on three spots on the teeth. Will kinda look like a Nuclear symbol. Good luck.
