Not sure of the correct term, but my 66 has suffered a tremendous amout of rust damage on the top of the cab around and on the the rain gutters. I used some glass to repair and shape it. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and if there are any ideas on how to repair it. I was thinking of cutting the gutters off but really rather not if there are alternatives. The rust really concentrated in the corners.
You dont NEED them, but they keep a lot of water from entering the cab. IMO, it would look a lot better without them. Im still trying to decide if Im going to cut mine off or not.
The gutter is actually a piece sandwiched in between the lower cab and the roof. You can remove it by simply slicing it off even with the cab with a cutoff wheel and grinding it smooth. Then go back over it with the welder (in short 1/4" welds, alternating sides to minimize warpage) then sand it smooth.
The problem is that if the gutter itself and the roofline are rusted, your going to have rust all in that sandwich I mentioned. Your best bet is to cut it out and patch it in or replace the entire cab. It is not a cheap repair and should be done by someone who knows how to weld sheetmetal.
I repaired mine myself and retained the drip rail so as to keep the stock appearance.
