My alt gauge jumps around when the engine is idling and no thing turned on.I can hear the voltage regulator clicking. If I turn on the lights or fan it smooths out and stops clicking.Any ideas?
Joe
Mine does the same thing. When it didn't jump around my battery went dead and I installed a new voltage regulator. Since than everything has been great. I do believe what you are seeing is ok for that year and style charging system.
If I'm wrong here gentlemen please correct me so I can correct mine.
You can replace the old point style regulator with an electronic one from a newer truck. That will keep the charging more consistent and should stop the needle bounce.
