My wife's car has a CVT in it, not entirely impressed. The motor flares too high too easy, and the fuel mileage is at least the same as the conventional style automatic, if not worse. So far it has given us 66,000 trouble free miles (knock on wood) so reliability hasn't been a problem as yet.
Well - if they're already dis-conned, I expect finding a used one or parts will be no easy task. The one and only I saw serviced was a trans-AXLE too. Not an easy unit to coax in and out.
The hybrids are all different than the 500-Taurus we're talking about here. I don't know what the hybrids are using.
The MY '05-'08 hybrid Escapes all used the same powertrain. The 2.3L Atkinson cycle with the eCVT tranny. The '09 MY hybrid Escapes went to the 2.5L Atkinson cycle engine, still with an eCVT. I'm not sure if there are any differences between the '09 and the earlier model sCVT.
