I always hear these "smoke stories" where people driving a diesel get mad at someone and give them a nice cool smoke bath. Ive had my 1996 F-250 Diesel Stick shift for about a month now and never once have I seen black smoke.
Ive only tried to do that once just for the hell of it and the smoke wasnt even black, it was more of a greyish color. I was just wondering how people do that exactly and what you have to do to make lots of black smoke. Also, what is a normal color for a trucks smoke. Like I said, mine is always greyish if I can even see it, Ive never seen it black. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? And what exactly are these people doing when they make a huge cloud of totally black smoke?
hot chips and big injectors do it. my 89 f350 with the idi7.3 in it used to smoke like a chimney no matter how i drove it. if there stock chiped it wont do much. its gonna be more greyish if the truck is stock they want the least amount of smoke as possible from the factory. when your making tons of horsepower it will be black, i can tell mine smokes with the diode mod cause the soot on the right rear wheel. i can see it more when theres someone behind me at night.
With a stock truck, you won't(shouldn't) see any smoke at all, not matter how hard you try. The engines are detuned quite a bit and finely tuned that you won't get black smoke, or what it really is: too much fuel.
To get black smoke rolling out of your pipe, you're gonna need more HP!! If you look at the trucks that talk about it, they have a lot of upgrades, intake, exhaust, gauges(to monitor truck) chip/tuner, those are the basic; but if you have the money and time you can get injectors, turbo, new HPOP, and the list goes on.
I've got the basics, with a flip chip at the highest setting =110hp, along with a T/C lock up switch, I let the engine lug a little in low rpm then just romp on it and the smoke just rolls out black as coal. Going down the highway if I romp on it as well, the smoke will roll. Around town, if a little rice burner is running next to me, I'll let the smoke roll, and it's funny to watch them swerve trying to avoid the smoke.
i remember the best one i had. i pulled out on a main road and there was a bmr that raced up to try to get infront of me so instead they just tailgated me and as soon as i grabbed 3rd it rolled big time and they were in a convertable and i saw the guys wife waving her hand infront of her face trying to blow the smoke away. well thats what ya get for tailgating me....
Yeah, my F-250 is totally stock. I guess theres no giving out diesel salutes for me
I was on a Dodge Forum trying to get help on an electrical problem on my dad's 2003 Dodge 3500 Diesel and I ran across a thread about people explaining their smoke stories. I thought it would be fun to hear everyones smoke stories here.
I was cruising through denver and this guy playing chicken in traffic with a shopping kart was running around almost getting hit, and he ducked inside the bus stop because I was in the right lane, I was at about 1300-1350 and just layed into it and put a cloud down the filled not only the bus stop, but the rest of the intersection. I had people pulling up beside me and giving the thumbsup.
Smoke is the product of not enough air in the cylinder when a large amount of fuel is injected. (think little or no turbo boost and stompin the accelerator down). You guys with manual trannys have is easier when it come to make it smoke. If you have the tailgater that won't go away, shift to a higher gear and lug the engine. Wait for the turbo to spool down and then stomp the pedal down. Low RPM, not enough air, and a lot of fuel will produce a decent cloud.

My 02 is stock and I cant do a salute at all with the auto. I notice some smoke in the review mirror at night when I pull out into traffic. I probably see it because of the headlights behind me. I notice a little puff of black smoke when I abruply lift the throttle after I have been on it hard.
I dont care for smoke to be honest. The little that the truck puts out now is acceptable to me.
