[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Nov-02 AT 06:37 PM (EST)]The auto tranmission has a little cable that runst to the instrument panel and tells you what gear you are in. My cable broke right at the steering column:

How do you take that little nub out? There isn't much left to grab on to, but it doesn't appear to screw out. I really don't want to take any more of the column apart if I can avoid it.
Also, the shifter on the tree drops down a gear if I hit a big enough bump. Is there any way to tighten this up?
"It doesn't attach there silly. There's a screw on top of the column that holds a plastic tab to the circular shroud the shift lever is attached to. It would hook on to that tab, but you didn't see this before because the tab broke off and there's a screw missing that holds the cable end next to the tab"
If anyone knows how to tighted up the shifter, I still haven't figured that one out yet
The detents for the shifter are INSIDE the transmission, so if it's jumping, you need to look at the tranny. You might be able to replace some worn bushings in the linkage, or put some sand in the column so the collar doesn't rotate as easily (but that'd only be temporary).
