Slip Sliding Away

Love my truck, hate the brakes. On a 1991 F150 2WD standard cab, new to me since last summer. We are in the depths of winter here in Edmonton, Alberta and the roads and highways are extremely crappy for driving on with lots of ice and snow pack. The brakes on the truck simply don't seem to be able to stop the truck on anything short of bare pavement or heavily sanded roads. When you do apply the brakes they seem to want to lock up right away, no matter how gentle you are with the brake pedal. It also tends to start to pull and slide sideways. My bride uses the truck as a daily driver to work and back and I use it at all other times. It's behaviour on snow and ice scares us badly and doesn't provide for a lot of trust in the trucks ability to stop in an emergency. The tires are only two years old and are an open tread Kumho, OEM spec size. I keep the tires inflated to 35psi and check them frequently. I have a canopy on the back and it provides considerable weight to the back end. I also have a few other "weighty" items in the box that are anchored and don't slide around. BTW, on dry pavement when you hit the brakes it stops straight and true wth no signs of pulling either left or right. The alignment is spot on and the front end has new ball joints.

Any thoughts on this or do we just learn to live with it?

Thanks

Mike

Are the "weighty" items in the bed biased to one side or another? On a crowned roadway any vehicle will slip "downhill". Use caution and if it is deep in snow increase your tire pressure. At low speed in deep snow a harder (read higher inflation pressure) tire will shed snow more easily.
