Question ? 4x4 hubs

Just bought a 2002 F-250 4x4, When I bought it I noticed that in addition to the Auto 4x4 switch on the dash, it has the external hub locks on the front wheels. Does this mean that if my auto hubs fail I can manually lock them in, or is this just a decorative peace. I have tryed turning the locks on the wheel with out using the dash switch and nothing happens. Is it just an extra lock when using 4x4? Thanks

I think the auto hubs have been replaced with manual hubs, and the transfer case is electric. If that's the case, you need to manually lock/unlock the hubs.

Your hubs should have an "auto" position and a "lock" position. The auto lets them act like auto hubs, but if one sticks you treat it like a manual and flip it to "lock".
