I recently bought a 1986 f 250 lariat xlt. It has 4wd, but it doesn't seem to be working. Before i go any further, i need to know what type of transmission is in the truck. Does anyone know or know how i could find out. Ford transmissions are new to me. I know turbo 350's , 400's, 700r4's etc! I'd appreciate any info.
Thanks,
Adam
What kind of engine does the truck have? Is it a manual or auto tranny?
351w/auto: C6-"P R N D 2 1"
302/auto: AOD-"P R N OD D 1"
I think the inline six also had the C6, but I'm not sure... I also don't know a whole lot about manual trannies, so I'm not much help there.
you'll find a metal tag, which is located under the lower front intermediate servo cover bolt or you'll find an sticker, the "Vehicle Certification Label" on the right driver side door pillar were you can find out the tranny code.
The trans is an automatic, and i definitly don't have an overdrive. By the gas milelage, thats obvious.
It's a 3 speed auto. p-r-n-3-2-1. The guy i bought it off said he wasn't sure if it was a 302 or 351. He wasn't sure if it was the original motor, just that it was rebuilt and sounded great. Did the f250 have a 302 option? or was the 351 the option? Working on a ford is new to me, even though i've owned 87 350 van. I never had to work on them, just turn the key. How could i tell the difference between a c4 and a c6? I've also heard of a c5?
A friend of mine had an 85 bronco with a snowplow. He sold the truck, kept the plow. Do you know if the mounting frame is the same so i could use it?
THANKS
I think the C6 has a different shape fluid pan from the C4 & C5. The C6 pan is a square with a corner missing (like a very fat "L"). I think the C4 and C5 have square or rectangular pans.
