has anybody done, or know what parts need swapped to turn a 1/2 ton IFS into a 3/4 ton IFS??? from what i've found so far, apparently the only parts that need swapped are the spindle, bearings, brake rotors, calipers and pads, and maybe the hub housing....and the springs...am i correct in this theory???
i did a cross-reference at checker in their book, and it showed that the upper ball joints were the same on a 1/2 and 3/4 ton front end, and the lower ball joints for the 1/2 ton matched up with those of the 3/4 ton 4600lb axle...i hadn't thought about the fact that the 3/4 is a 50, and the 1/2 is a 44, tho...what front end would a 93 f-250 have under it???
If it has a gvwr around 8400-8600lbs and/or a full-floating rear it most likely has a 50.
If it has a gvwr around 7800-8400lbs and/or a semi-floating rear it most likely has a 44.
44 hubs are about 3" diameter
50 hubs almost completly fill the wheel opening.
My gvw is 8600 on the tag but it has 3" hubs up front. According to the guys at NAPA it is the D44 HD. Outer u-joint on the knuckle uses the little 'c' clips inside on the cap. They tell me the C50 uses retaining clips on the outside of the cap.
I have an 86 150 with the D44 and it sure looks the same.
mtflat...what kinda springs does your 88 have?? leaf or coil? cuz i'm looking at swapping over to leaf, if it ain't too terrible of a pain...may also just go to a heavier duty coil spring outta like a 2wd 1 ton or something, too...we'll see...
The 88 has leaf springs up front. I'm not sure what the shackle mounts look like. I can check tomorrow. I'll try to check some measurements on the 86 and the 88 to see how close they are externally. Do you have any time this week to stop by?
F-250 4x4's all have leaf springs. You could get the leaf springs, hangers, shackles etc. from a boneyard and fab up something to make your 1/2 ton in to a light 3/4 ton.
If you are a good at fabing stuff up and are an excellant welder, i don't why one wouldn't be able to cut the 1/2 ton knuckles of the 1/2 TTB arms, do the same to a dana 50 ttb, then weld the dana 50 knuckles onto the 44 arms, then just transfer everything over to the newly fab ttb arms.
And the TTB arms are a stamped steel as far as i can tell so this make welding easier, but i would be sure to stagger the cutts when cutting the knuckles off to spread the stress out when rewelded, then i would reinforce the arms with some quarter inch plate.
i've got a friend that's looking at buying a 93-ish 3/4 ton 4x4 so she can put the 7.3 diesel in her 1 ton...i don't like that bodystyle of ford, but if the 3/4 ton has the dana 50, i may just buy the front and rear running gear out from under the truck...and depending on which tranny, that too, mebbe...we'll see...
mtflat...i should have time this week...it's looking like it's gonna be pretty cold, so i don't think we'll be working...and i may just talk to my boss about putting me on layoff till the end of march, so i can get some stuff taken care of at home...i'll give you a call...
