5.0 timing question

I know this is the truck forum, but I had a question about a 5.0 EFI motor. It is in a 88 lincoln towncar. My question is about the timing of the engine. The car is running sluggish and I was planning to adjust the timing. Would this cause any problems? Are there any special techniques or procedures to follow? I am used to the caveman motors, this is my first fuel injected computer controlled ford.

you must first unhook the spout connector and then you can proceed to adj. the timing either with a light or vacuum gauge, as each engine varies as to what works best ,the vacuum gauge methods seems to work well for all motors. put a vacuum gauge on any manifold prot and adj. timing until the highest reading is obtained then retard the timing until the gauge drops 1in. and the timing will be very good for that particular engine.remember to reconnect the spout.

im going through some similar issues with replacing my motor completely. let me first ask if you've done a regular tune-up (ie plugs, wires, cap/rotor)? is so, its possible i guess that your distributor has moved slightly. you might check to make sure that the rotor is pointing to #1 when the #1 cylinder is at TDC. even if it has moved, unless forced by some great outside force, it should be only a fraction of an inch.
let me know if this helps or doesnt. i'll try to help you through what ive learned after just replacing my engine.

jms

can you elaborate a little on what you mean by sluggish? (ie: rough, slow acceleration, misses, etc)

Check for slack in your timing chain. This will screw up valve timing too so you can't compensate for it by timing the distributor.
