Just wondering if anyone has experienced cracking of the upper rad support on both sides on the top beam right in plain site. 95 F250 7.3 PS 4x4, did a mig job on them but would like to replace with new. Is this caused by excessive frame movement or vehicle twist at one time? Or is my tweaked 444 just pulling too hard on the trailer? Any help is appreciated. Josh
I had the exact same problem on my 96 when I bought it. It had 99K on it then. I just did the same thing you did. But I put a piece of metal strap across the cracks and welded all the way around it. I have 128K now and have had no probems thus far. Yes you can replace that core support, but it's a rather lengthy process. Just weld it up and forget it. Just my two cents.
Thanks man, I was getting worried, had this up for a few days now! Thats what I kinda figured that it should be alright welded. Do you know if they crack anywheres else? I tried looking over the whole thing but some cracks are hard to spot. Thanks again.
Man, I looked high and low on mine and didn't see cracks anywhere else. The only reason I found it was because when I test drove it I noticed the hood floating. once the upper core support cracked on both sides the only thing supporting it, or holding it down I should say, was that center piece that holds the grill and hood latch. So if it's not cracked I wouldn't look any further. Weld it up, put some paint on it to keep it from rusting, and you should be good to go.
sorry to say this to all of you but i also have the same problem cracks on both sides but if you inspect it further at the bottom where the support bolts to the frame you will probably find it rusted to nearly nothing. i am a mechanic and have open access to lots of parts warehouses but nobody makes a core support for the diesel that is aftermarket. they make it for the gas engines but they are different. so you either pay 3 to 400 from ford or like i did and find one from a salvage yard. mine was from a burned truck rusted surface and structuraly for about 100 bucks then needed to be restored. not a fun process but if you think about how much of your truck is supported by this piece you will think twice about just welding it and forgetting it. grill, headlights, radiator, a/c condenser, intercooler if equipped, fenders, and your hood.
I went over mine with a fine tooth comb and found no rust at all. Now granted mine is a texas truck and rust really isn't a problem here. So I would say your point is valid for trucks in high rust areas. But the rest of my core support was solid.
i stand corrected. in my case it was rusted but i guess that is not the cause of the cracks. so rather than replace it, if there is not rust welding is the best choice.
