Allright, I've read all the posts on retreads and would still like to talk to someone that has ran the Hi-tech retreads. I have ordered a set of 8 ply 285/75-16s from them already. I have to wait a while for them. About three weeks they say, since it's a size they don't cap often.
We used to run a lot of recaps around here since we had a local plant, and yes, I had two separate on me in a passenger car 20 yrs ago. These are for a '79 f250 4x4 and I ordered the "D-MUD" treads. Shipping and all cost me half of the cheapest new tire in that size around here. Any direct experience with Hi-Techs retreads on here?
I would like to hear some feedback from someone who has had first hand experience as well. I too have heard the horror stories, but you'd think they could have come a long way in the last 20 years.
I'm not sure what you mean by hi-tech retreads but I ran many years on retreads. So long as they're not run on over the road heat, they're a great money saver. Heat kills them...
The 285/75 R16s from Hi Tech balanced within 4oz. and look good (other than the Wild Country sidewalls). They sing like a really bad church choir and pull great. I can put the stock F250 in the goo and spin it low rev in 2wd until they fill up and quit moving, then spin them up a bit and they will clean out and pull through well. Reverse as good as forward since they are non directional.
We'll see how they hold up, but for now I'm happy.
I run retreads but they are Bandags and on the drive tires (duallies) it is illegal for us to run caps for steer tires here in Canada. Even thou I never ever had problems pealing a cap I still wouldn't run caps for steer tires even if it was legal.
There isn't anything wrong with retreads I wish Bandag offered better selection for 16" tires they only offer Brawny A/T, Gripper,Commercial Traction deep and ATRT which is a highway tread.
I run the commercial traction they definatly don't work well in mud they don't selfclean in mud they pack up and turn into slicks. I think I have gotten stuck because of them. The only good thing is I get 2-3 years of wear out of them because the tread compound is designed for class 8 trucks.
I would be interested in the Hi Techs but by the time I pay shipping, duty and taxes it would be expensive.
I have had tires before that howled pretty good I don't think anything can be as bad as the old bias ply Town and Country traction tires the ones made by BFGoodrich or Fisk they howled. My dad had them on his old 77 Ford 1 ton dually flatdeck the tires used to whoo whoo whoo you know the sound
Interesting you mention the old bias ply town and country. I have a set of them on my '74 k10 chev. 7.50x16. They never wear out. Ever. I wish I could find them in a 9.50 x 16.
The common sizes were 7.00-15 7.50-16 8.25-16.5 and 9.50-16.5.
They did wear good but kinda slippery on wet roads I know when I had a set of 7.00-15s on my 79 F-150 4x4 even the 300-6 could light them up. My old man used to have a set of 7.00-15s he used to put on the back of his F-150 2wd during the winter for snow traction the 351m use to light them up pretty good they spun so easy
I ran them on my 79 because I had a set of them off of a wrecked truck so I slapped them on. They did howl like crazy they had decent offroad traction I pealed them off and put radial tires back on.
On dads 77 F-350 would get slippery when the roads were wet even with a heavy steel deck on the truck.
I've run two sets of Hightec tires. One on a Suzuki Samurai and the other on an 87 F250 4x4 diesel. They are really good tires for the money. The only complaint I have is that the tread is too soft. I live outside of Las Vegas and all my off-roading is in rocky soil. They do o.k. till you spin em, then they chunk out pretty fast, but any tire will do that. They balance pretty fair and they get awesome traction in anything soft. I wish they offered more BFG 3 ply sidewalls cause I've run a lot of thorns through the side of the samurai tires. They are really thin right where the tread makes the corner to the sidewall. I doubt that I will get more than 15-20K miles out of a set, but I drive pretty hard, so that's kinda normal for me. So far I haven't lost a cap and temps here in the summer go way above 125 for 2 months. I've seen asphalt turn gooey and left footprints on the sidewalk from old pavement in July.
I run them all the way around, I'm pretty careful especially with keeping speed down below 75 in the summer. Overall I think they are about the best money you can spend in tires for something that you don't drive a whole lot.
