05's first service

Took my 05 350 in for it's first service. I started having trouble pulling up hills, and my mileage went from 13 down to as low as 8.4. The amount of weight I was pulling was from as little as 400lbs., to as much as 9,000. I knew there were not any codes. On some hills, speed got down to 40, tranny downshifted 2 times. RPMs were about 2500. I reset the computer, no difference. Came back from Michigan, and it finally started doing ok I as got into Arkansas. (I was headed to Tyler,Tx......)

First guess was I bought some bad fuel somewhere, but I don't think that's what it was. This is my first diesel in a pickup, I think it should be doing better. It now has 6400 miles on it.

Dealer couldn't find anything. So they re-flashed the computer. Wish he
asked me first....

I told them about the 13.5 qts of oil, instead of 15, and told him to check broadcast messages 1512 and 1574. He said those date back to 1993, and have nothing to do with the 6.0 PSD. I think he's looking at TSB's.
Does anyone have a copy of these messages so I can show him??

Tnks,

I wonder if the turbo isn't giving enough boost, if any. this would cause lack of power and more fuel consumption. When you step on it hard do you get the turbo noise?

Not always. Dealer said everything checked out in the shop. I'll just have to stop at a dealer when I'm out on the road, while it's acting up, and see if they catch it.

lack of power can be several other things not as serious as the turbo, but sensors that feed the PCM for the turbo performance.

Most dealers wont spend a lot of time analyzing if there isn't something throwing codes. It's the way Ford pays them for warranty. They only get paid for the fix, not the analysis.

Here is some things out of the "symptoms chart" from the Service Manual:

§ Lack/Loss Of Power
§ Runs Rough
§ Misses
§ Buck/Jerk
§ Hesitation/Stumble
§ Surge
§ Additional Driveability Concerns: Poor Fuel Economy

Note: Perform the following preliminary checks:
§ Confirm brakes are not dragging.
§ Check for oil in coolant.
§ Check engine oil level.
§ Confirm oil change within 12,070 km (7,500 miles).
§ Check air intake system: Air Filter Minder.
§ Check MAP sensor hose for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
§ Check EBP sensor tube for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
§ Check intake manifold system for leaks.
§ Confirm acceptable SAE oil viscosity and API rating of oil.
§ Check for sufficient clean fuel.
§ Check for air in fuel.
§ Check for intake restriction.
§ Compare loaded weight of vehicle with performance expectations.
§ Power monitor active.
§ Transmission concerns.
