I Have A Chance To Get An 03' F250 Scab Sb 4x4 W/ The 5.4l Engine. It Is A Great Deal And About 10k Less Than A Similar Truck Equiped With The Diesel. I Don't Tow Anything And My Heaviest Load Is A Couch Or Fridge. My Question Is: Will The Engine Pull It's Own Weight Fine Or Will I Have To Mash The Gas All The Time Just To Get The Thing Moving?
my 04 f350 sc sb 4.10s 5.4 auto 4x4 ,pulls my kubota on a 16ft car trailer,4,000lbs on problem,7k/8k and some hills, you would pushing it harder but it would do it, never under estimate the 5.4l.
I know a guy with an Excursion that has the 5.4L. He is the head man on construction sites, and frequently has 6-7 men in the truck, and pulls a 16ft flatbed trailor with a huge welder, two 8 ft. toolboxed (full), and a grizzly 4-wheeler. He says it's great, and he averages close to 16 mpg.
I too have a 5.4l SD I find it is more than able to handle any task I throw at it. when I moved I moved all my belongings with it and a trailer no problems whatsoever. Right now I have 700lbs in the bed, and I cant even tell it is there. You will et people who swear by their V10's and more horse power and torque will never hurt, but most of us who by these trucks who dont tow or haul on a daily bases will be wasting our money with a bigger engine, both in cost, extra cost of maintenence, and gas (even though people swear gas usage is the same) =O
I have an 01 250 cc 4x4 5.4L the ONLY thing to think about is RESALE. I've got mine for sale and just about every caller asked "is it a diesel?" and then the call is over. I even have 5.4L in the add.
It depends on your definition of "enough." Like the other guys said, take one for a ride. Around town I have zero complaints. Plenty of power. Highway is a different story...
I don't know. I see these discussions all the time on the board. Don't get me wrong they are alot of fun. I like reading them.
I am just amazed that anything could have ever been towed/hauled prior to having 600ft/lbs of torque and 320hp motors in pickup trucks. I guess its the American way..bigger stronger faster. I also like having that choice. I am just suprised to see what people think they "need".
I am putting on the kevlar suit for the flames coming. Go ahead.
Drive it- If you like it and all appears well mechanically & within budget, buy it!
If you desire more power, look at the V10 or Diesel- They cost more but deliver more.
I use a 01 F250 reg cab 4x2 5.4 as a work truck. It won't pull a greesed string out of a cat's backside. My wife just bought an 05 F150 FX4 with the 5.4 Dang what an engine. it will get up and go! If the only difference is the extra valve? It made a BIG difference.
i got a '04 f-250 xlt 4x4 ext cab sb with the 5.4 and its fine for what i do and thats stock, i still havnt added anything to it, my dads '84 or something like that, dually 1ton flatbed with the goose neck hitch installed just rolled over 400,000 miles in dec and that thing has hauled horse trailers for years not to mention the countless other tasks that living in the mountains affords trucks (hes on his second rebuild of the motor) but it just goes to show ya dont need a diesel for everything and gas motored trucks can be excellent work horses
Overall Sounds Great. The Dealer I Go Through Is Looking At This Truck At An Auction. I Havn't Seen It, But He Swears It's Real Nice. (therefore I Havn't Had A Chance To Drive It Yet) He's Worried That He'll Buy It And I Won't Like It And Leave Him Stranded With It. He Says That He Can't Sell Any Sd W/gas Engines. Everyones Stuck On Diesel. Thanks For The Input. By The Way, It's An 03' F250 Xlt 4x4 Scab Sb 5.4 Auto, 20k Miles, And Has Xlt Sport Pkg. Dealer Say $23k. Sound Fair If It's Extra Clean?
