I happened to stumble across a complete tach dash from an 82 Bronco at a local wreckers. Looking at wiring diagram I don't see any difference in the wire harness to a regular dash with gauges. Anyone have experience with this swap that could confirm this. Thanks.
I used this posting thread as reference below to acquire and install a gauge cluster with a factory tach. The only difference was the gauge cluster came from a automatic and mine was a 4-speed. All it took was removing two small screws to swap my (4-speed blank) with the automatic blank. Everything else was plug it in and start it up to get the tach to work.
Thanks for the replies guys. I did the swap this past weekend, and all went pretty well. Unfortunelty, the tach is not working. I went over the two wire connection on the driver side fender, by the ignition module, right to the coil and the ground on the distributor. All seemed to be in good order, making contact. I especially made sure I had ground, since it is a eight. Only thing I can think is either connection on the printed circuit (which I doubt it is) or a bum tach. When it gets warmer I'll take it apart again and direct wire the tach itself on its own to verify.
what i would do if i was u...just leave the stock gauges alone and go to the auto parts and buy an aftermarket tach..saves headaches on swaping clusters....just my 2 cents though!
The other side of that coin is........
Keep it stock, there's nothing nicer than a clean, stock vehicle.
My 83 XLT is showroom stock, get lots of nice comments.
I did that swap years ago in my 83, The wire for a factory tach was there, it just wasn't connected. I now may have to do this swap again with the 85 I just got.
Yes, basically if the original wiring is intact! At least it was for me. I just finished pulling the tach cluster again because the fuel gauge with that gauge cluster wasn't working. I replaced the faulty fuel gauge with the good fuel gauge from the original cluster. I now have a working gas guage with both tanks.
