Thumbs up Headliner Replacement

My '92 is in need of a new headliner. Instead of going back with a bland, stock headliner, I was considering using a nice Realtree Hardwoods fabric to give the interior a little personality. I have 2 questions:

1. Will I need to glue a foam backing onto the headliner board prior to gluing the fabric on? Wal-Mart sells thin foam that seems perfect for that.

2. What can I use in place of the spray adhesive? That stuff is almost useless.

Any extra advice y'all have is appreciated.

Are you using Scotch Super 77 spray adhesive? Its what most manufacturers recommend for this particular application. Be sure you give the adhesive enough time to "tack up" before you install the new material. Installing too soon after spraying will cause the adhesive to absord too far into the foam backing. The foam backing is recommended if for no other reason than to give the spray adhesive a pourous surface to adhere to. Not using it will allow ANY adhesive to soak directly into the fabric and could discolor or distort the fabric when applied to the ceiling fiberboard. Using something other than regular headliner material sounds like a great idea though.

My response is based solely on my own personal experience with the products mentioned. Someone else may have a better method but I've always found the spray adhesive and foam backing to work quite well.

I have only used 3M Spray Trim Adhesive and have found it to be unreliable. I'll have to try the brand you recommend. Hopefully, my little experiment into originality will be a success. I'll have to assemble a gallery once all is said and done.

Thanks for the input.

i recovered the headliner in my '83 about 6 months ago. i just stuck the new fabric on the board and didn't worry about adding any foam. i had to make a few reapirs the the board, used duct tape. the new fabirc has a busy pattern on it, like yours will, which helps hide some of the imperfections. i used the Super77 spray and haven't really had any problems. i will encourage you to NOT be stingy with the spray. spray a good coat on both the fabric and the board before marrying the two together.

I replaced the fabric on my 84 Ranger headliner 3 years ago. I removed the old rotted out foam and glued the fabric directly to the cardboard using 3M super 76 high tack spray adhesive. It still is holding today!

Sweet, 3broncocrazy. Great minds think alike.

Did you have to remove the upholstery from the door panels (around the lock/window switch) when you redid them? Does that piece come off of the door or did you have to cover it in place?

Oh, that's just great!!!! Leave me hanging. LOL. I'm fairly handy so I think I can come up with a viable solution. If I don't post pictures soon, y'all can assume that it turned out looking like crap. I ordered the fabric yesterday so hopefully, I can get started soon, providing the weather warms up some.

My EB is brown with tan interior so I think the Realtree Hardwood camo will really stand out. My wife won't be too thrilled about it but she never rides in it. I'm about to sink some serious cash into upgrades (new motor, transmission, etc.) so I'll assemble a gallery after the work is complete. It's a good looking truck now but will be even nicer once I'm done.

Well.... I got the cab portion of the headliner done before I had to put the Bronco in the shop to have some warranty work done on my rebuilt engine (with less than 200 miles on it, but that's another post). Hope to have some pics posted soon.

I went with Realtree Hardwood and it looks great! The foam was a MAJOR pain to remove but the results were worth the effort. I'm working 16 hour shifts this weekend so I won't get any pics done till next week.

The cam went bad on the rebuilt and it took them 3 days to get it replaced. I was hoping they'd just put a new motor in but that didn't happen. I picked it up at noon today and it seems to be running well. I still have the idle problem but that has nothing to do with the new motor. Probably the IAC. I cleaned it a while back and it didn't help much. Guess I'll have to replace it now.
