since you guys helped so much with my other problem, thought i try this out. my cold starts have the engine running at Super high idle, last for about 5-7 minutes typical, sometimes more. what is the high idle suppose to be? if i wan tto lower the idle, how do i do so? and about the temp switch and solenoid, where are they?? thank you!
The fast idle is used to help warm up the truck a little quicker and is perfectly normal. It comes on in conjunction with the timing advance when you push on the throttle pedal. I think the normal "high idle" is about 900 rpm and it can be adjusted.
My normal routine for starting is to cycle the glow plugs and start the engine without touching the pedal. Once oil pressure comes up, I will set the high idle.
i know why it idles high, but it's ideling Super high, 1500 rpm, is that norm? how do you set the cold idle?? and hot just in case it's off too? thanks!!!
The fast idle solenoid is on the passenger side of the injection pump.
There is a screw on the plunger of the fast idle solenoid to adjust the speed.
Fast idle should be about 850 to 900 RPM.
The temp switch is located between the fuel filter bracket and the thermostat housing. It is way down in there where you can barely see it.
That same switch also controls the cold start timing advance as well as the fuel filter line heater.
The fast idle solenoid is a electric plunger that pushes a brass rod out to move the throttle lever on the passenger side of the pump. I do believe it is adjustable in and out (change the length of it). The normal idle adjustment is on the passenger side of the pump and it is a adjustable screw surrounded by a spring that holds the throttle lever from closing too far. They are 2 separate adjustments. Also on the cold idle solenoid, you will have to look at the mounting bracket for the solenoid, someone may have gotten antsy and bent it to make it idle faster.
