Well, actually top loaders go way back. They were called top loaders because the access plate was on the top (3 speeds, 4 speeds). while most GM loaded from the side as did lighter ford transmissions. They usually had plates machined on the tail housing to bolt on the floor mounted shifter. These where considered very tough.

There are top loaders and Top Loaders. The latter refers to the RUG series Ford built 4spds of the muscle car era. These were offered behind everything from a 6 banger to a 427 cammer.
