First, I'd like to say hello to all. I own a beautiful 1965 ford f-100 pick-up. I'm having problems, (sometime) starting it. There are times when it cranks right up and there are times when i need to press the pedal 12-15 times to get it started and it's not flooded after all that. I have a 351c with edelbrock performer intake and carb (600 cfm). I've check the timing and it's good the only other thing I could think of is the carb. Maybe not. Please help. Oh, once i get it running is good until i drive it for thirty or so minutes(until the engine gets hot) turn it off and it starts all over again. Some people say it could be the igniton also. I have the HEI vice points. Explain to me the tuning procedure for this carb.(A/F). If you got all that ans can help. It would be appreciated greatly
As a starting point the two idle screws in the front of the carb should be 1.5 turns out.
What does your fuel psi look like, maybe faulty fuel pump or clogged fuel filter?
Is this cold or hot starts? If its hot, then make sure your fuel line is away from the block or direct heat sources and you may wanna try a $20 phenolic carb spacer.
Whats your initial timing set at?
Maybe the carb needs to be cleaned out.
Set the idle screws 1.5 turns out
Get the thing started and up to operating temperature.
Set the air screw, if you look at the throttle linkage and your standing in front of the truck, the screw will be on the end of the throttle linkage and it will be facing you, set your idle to 650 or so if you have a stock cam.
Now on the carb you will see two screws right above the three vacuum ports....Slowly turn one of these idle screws out... keeping an eye on your tachometer or a vacuum gauge, in either case turn the screws until the needle stops increaseing either rpm or vacuum...once it has stopped increasing... reset your idle rpm to 650 or previous setting...repeat this with the other idle screw.
Now with a vacuum gauge, at idle with a fully warmed engine, connect a vacuum gauge to direct manifold vacuum either on the intake or on the right port on the carb. Loosen the distributor hold down, rotate the distributor until the vacuum no longer increases and back it of one or two Hg, lock it down and reset your idle rpm...it should be good, you will need to run it though, find a nice steep hill and test aggressive takeoffs and see if you get any pinging...you may need to adjust your vacuum advance and mechanical advance to get optimal results, as well as, play around with the metering rods and jets, either read the book that came with the carb or go to the edelbrock website.
Just to make sure I'm tracking with what you have said. I need to turn both screws all the way down first, then back off 1.5 turns for my initail setting with both screws and follow your directions with the rest. Bare with me I know it sounds amature but this is how I get it right.
