Are there any requirements to list quality of diesel fuel at pumps? Like Octane ratings? If not, is it simply luck of the draw when you get better mileage from one place and not another?
As far as I know, there aren't any requirements, that's why we don't see anything at the pumps. You can go in and ask what the fuel is, at minimum they should be able to give you the cetane number, if they can't, I'd be weary of getting fuel from them if they don't know what they are running.
If you find a stop with good fuel, most people try to keep using the same place, instead of jumping from one to another. Quality fuel can make a big difference in how well your engine runs. There was a post a couple days ago about a guy that filled up in Alabama and gained a little bit in mpg and noticed his engine was quieter, just from different/better fuel.
If you search the oil company's websites they will sometimes list the cetane rating for thier diesel. I did a lot of searching and ended up with BP/Amoco Premium diesel. It has a cetane rating of 48-50. Makes a noticable difference in noise and performance. Most others are in the mid to low 40s.
