cutting drive shaft
Balancing is the for sure way of insuring a no problem job first time. The balance becomes more critical the faster you spin the d/s. If you have a "highway gear", large OD tires, and don't drive the vehicle very fast, you may be OK without a balance. If you have overdrive, remember that the d/s rpm will be higher than the engine rpm. In the case of an AOD for example, the d/s rpm will be 1/3 more than the engine rpm when in overdrive. The service manual shows a procedure for a field balance using 2 radiator hose clamps. It shows how to start the balance with the screws 180 degrees apart and moving them until the vibration is eliminated. It is trial and error. You did not ask for advice regarding the actual cutting and rewelding, so please accept my next comment as a helpful hint. Be sure to mark the weld yoke and tube so that you can replace the yoke in the same orientation to the other yoke on the other end. Clocking the yokes makes sure they retain the proper relationship.
