Gas tank behind the seat. Running (F) P265 50R15 (R) P295 50R15. I know on my 54 the tire was monuted on the driver rear fender, but on a 56 were is the spare tire monuted? And what type of spare tires are you guys carrying, if any?
Thanks
ED
My truck originally had the spare under the rear bed between the frame rails. Later my family replaced the smooth driver's side fender with one shaped to mount a spare...my theory is they did this because they couldn't find a suitable smooth F-250 fender for the driver's side.
Here you can see the original spare tire mount hanging low beneath the truck in a 1957 vintage photo: .
The stock location of the spare was under the bed as mentioned above. Starting in '54 Ford offered the spare on the fender as an option for extra money. If you want to locate it in the original loaction there is special hardware and hangers that is needed. I have seen this on ebay. I got mine in a local junk yard.
On my 56 the rail holding up the bed wood (name?) ahas been changed to allow the tire to fit up higher and more "out of the way/hidden" Perhaps also to accommodate a wider type tire?
i have a 54 (parts pickup) with the stock grille guard and the whole spare tire get-up on the side....that is the first one that id actually seen with the real factory spare tire fender....being from ND, ive seen where the farmers maybe bought the side bracket, put it on themselves, and took a sledge to the rear fender to make the tire it in it....looked like hell, but i guess it did the job, because ive seen numerous ones like that...too bad i didnt get pics though
I carry a can of fix-flat (sealant and compressed air in a can) in all my vehicles, which has repaired the puctures I have made. Since I have been running modern tires on my truck, I've never had a flat. When I had the original wheels and tires, I carried a spare under the bed. It was rather noisy when crossing speed bumps and train tracks. Maybe I should slow down. Nahh!
The spare tire fender that I have was an option on 53-56 I believe. I have a regular fender that I am going to replace that spare tire fedner with here soon. I have a 1987 Crown Victoria IFS and a 8" rear end. SO I am using a space saver for a spare. It is small enough to fit behind the seat but safe and big enough to get me safely to a repair station.
