I also have the freaky idle with it connected. I also noticed back in the summer that the A/C seemed to work better with it disconnected. About 15000 miles with it disconnected and gonna stay like that.
IMO the techs cannot officially break from the corporate line regarding the EGR vavle issues. However, I have seen / read where some techs are talking about unplugging it under their breath so to speak.
In addition, the EGR does a pretty fine job of creating billable service / warranty hours for the techs and service depts. So while their hands are tied they're not tied to far away from their pocket book. So while many techs may agree with unplugging it but can't... at least they get some revenue for having to fix EGR related issues.
Again, IMO...the egr valve as we know it today and the oil overfill issue has caused many owners and Ford a tremendous amount of undue greif and $$$ and customer dis-satisfaction.
BTW, also IMO, the EPA up to our neck in this issue as well.
Not yet here in CA, but starting 2007 they'll have to have at least particulate testing done. Don't know it that will be applied retroactively or not to older model years.
