well here we go

Hey guys, this is my first post in the AV forum here, and I am pretty clueless when it comes to stereos so bear with me.
I have a 2004 Ranger FX4 Level II that I am slowly but surely turning into a hobby truck. My next step is going to be the Stereo system. I know that there are plenty of enclosures prefabbed for the back of the cab, but I need something a little bit different. I am using the truck offroad too, and was tossing around the idea of getting rid of the useless jump seats and building a box with all of the area, but with the speaker enclosure (maybe one 12" or 10")right in the center. The Amp would be mounted on the front verticle surface of the enclosure
The rest of the "box" would be apolstered to match but I would be able to lift a lid (kind of a secret compartment) on either side to access my tow straps, spare parts, off road gear etc.

Does that sound possible? if so, how do I do the equations for the enclosure dimensions?

Also, how much amp do I need to push one 12 or 10", two high quality door speakers, and some tweets?

does this sound do-able?

thanks folks!!!

Sounds like a great idea. I built a custom box for my Ranger XLT and ripped the junk seats out in the back. Mind you, I'm running 2 10 inchers, so my config is different.

If you're offroading you may want to think about a downfiring sub. Hard to damage the cone of the sub, and the downfiring produces a nice bass without blowing it directly at you (if you set the sub on the front vertical of the box).

To figure out the dimensions:

Of course, you will need to know what sub you're going to use first. They all have different requirements for depth and volume of the enclosure. Also have different requirements for power.

You'd probably do just fine with a 10 inch, since a 12 inch will require a bit more space, both in the depth and the total volume.

I've heard good things about Audiobahn as far as amps go. Maybe a nice 4 channel like the Audiobahn A6004T would suit your needs. I'm not as familar with them as others on here, so I cannot say for sure.

My own setup runs an MTX Thunder for the subs and an old school PPI Art series for the doors.

Good luck on your project.

thanks for the info. I am not looking to win contests, just want some good sound with quality stuff. That being said do you think that 1 10" would be pretty decent? do "downfiring subs" still mount up the same? Or is the woofer actually flipped and pointing into the box? That looks like a really stupid question now that I read it.

I think a single 10 inch will do, a good quality sub\amp combo and a lot of power. Will fill in your music low end without any problems. You could go with a 12 incher if you want to, but you need to keep in mind how much more space a 12 will take vs the 10.

A downfire is just that, firing down. Same mounting as any sealed box enclosure. I like the downfire in my truck. The cones are hidden (no one see's my subs), my dobie puppy doesn't put her foot through one, and I think it helps the bass resonate a bit more in the truck.
