I recently purchased a 94 F250 for use on the farm, but have a few problems which I need to fix. The tail lights/turn signal/brake lights do not work. The third brake light, back-up lights, head lights, and front turn signals function fine. I checked all the fuses (in cab area and power distribution box), bulbs, and replaced the multi-function switch but still no rear lights. I also have a problem with the automatic transmission not shifting into third. Can these items be related and what else should I check in the electrical system?

I would start with the brake light circuit. Get a testlight or voltmeter. Open the steering column or somewhere convienent where you can get to the wires shown in this diagram.
Make sure you have voltage on the lightgreen wire when the brake pedal is pushed. If you do, then make sure you have voltage on the lightgreen/orange wire and the orange/lightblue wire when the brake pedal is pushed, and the turnsignal switch is in the middle position. If you need any help reading the diagram, let us know.
I understand that both sides rear lights do not work. If so, I would guess it is a ground problem. On my 94 F-150 the black ground wire for the rear lights is splitted out of the main cable loom and bolted to the most rear cross member on the left side. Have a look under the rear bumper and see if you can find it. On mine the ground connection was badly corroded.

Do the back-up lights use the same ground wire as the other lights? He said his back-up lights where working. Grounds are a good thing to check though.
I missed that point, actually I don't know if it's the same ground. But anyway I would check the rear end cables, connectors and ground. It doesn't take much time.
