I know this topic has been brought up and i know the web page for the conversion. I just want to be sure i can switch my 4x2 to a 4x4 without switching backends. I have 2 choices for a transfer case. I've got a manual transfer case out of a 1984 i can use and a manual out of a 1988 which is the same year as my truck i want to put it on. Do i only have to change the front end and add the transfer case. plus put in the different drive shafts?
As long as the gear ratio is the same, you can. Your drive shaft length is going to be different as your tailshaft will be removed and the transfer case and tailshaft with it will replace it. You then have the front suspension, steering unit, to deal with. Lots to do.

why do people change the back gears from lets say a 3.55 to a 4.10 and then don't change the front? or do they i've just been missing something? What do i have to deal with the steering unit. I'm going buy the 2x4 to 4x4 conversion tech article on this website.
The wheels turn at a rate of 3.55 revolutions to 1, if your back axle is a 4.10 to one, it is geared lower and turns more slowly. In order for your front and rear to be beneficial they must turn at the same rate. You can't have a wide receiver pulling on a rope with a tackle, it will be lopsided I assure you.

allright i got ya. Could i just swap the whole back end, transfer case, and front end from a 250 into my 150?
you could depending on years etc, but if you are doing this because the body on the F250 is trash then swap bodies and engines it would be much easier.
that's not entirely true! talking offorad here.... you don't HAVE to regear but you will not want to by any means drive on hard ground in 4x4. you really shoulding do this anyways. in mud drags a lot of time guys will gear their front axle different than their rear to keep the front end on top of the mud. not saying this is what you are gonna do but don't change your plans all around or go to long lengths just b/c your gears are off. also they aren't all that off either....going from 3.55 to 4.10 shouldn't hurt and i doubt you would notice a difference.
2x4 to 4x4 steering conversion is very easy you just gotta get creative. might i suggest some aftermarket options while you are already paying for it anyways! go check out shakerbuilt.com and see what he has to offer! lots of good stuff to use.
My truck is an 88 and so is the truck i'm gonna get the parts off of. The 250 that i want the parts off of is a manual and have an automatic. and don't really wanna change transmissions. For the space i have to work with i think that changing the underside would be easier than removing the box and cab. will everything line up ok or will i have to adjust anything
