In order to find out if it is a job that I might be able to handle and if not if I might be able to afford paying someone else to do, I call about getting my rear seal replace on '82 E150 4.9L and the mecanic recomended by a transsmission professional tells me that the book says it will take 2hrs and will cost about $200.I make the appointment.
My friends say no way so I call Ford Dealer and they say 6hrs and $590.
If the latter is the truth it is hard to justify the value of the van against the cost of repair. Should I still take it to the first guy?
6 hours sounds about right to me. you have to pull the tranny to get to the seal. not a hard job. if you have some one do it make sure they replace the front seal in the tranny. sometimes you can get away without it, but not that big a deal when you have it out already.
mabey he has a trick up his sleeve. mabey he can do it in 2 hours. i and a freind have done it in 3 spd trucks in about 2 hours a couple of times, but then we had 6 6 cylinder trucks between us. i would check a few more places before i let him do it.
If it is a one piece seal you might be able to replace it in 4 hours. Talk to the guy who says he can do it in two. If he can take a video camera along and tape it cause I want to see it!!!
