Here is my problem... I have a 1983 F100 with a 302, 3spd auto, 158,000 km (100,000 miles) that is all original. Lately, when the engine is hot and I back into my driveway, my oil lite would flicker on and off... never staying on. I could but the truck in neutral, park and the light would go out.
My locak FORD dealer checked my oil pressure today and it was abou 8-9 lbs at idle. They said it was a bit on the low side but the light should not come on until the pressure dropped to 5 lbs. We then replaced the sending unit (only $10) because the old one was OLD and they didn't even think it came from a Ford by the looks of it.
So far so good. My question is, is the oil pressure too low at idle and if so why would that be? Anyone else have a problem like that and what was the fix?
There is only one real fix for that problem, that is a complete engine rebuild with proper spec'ed bearings, as the old ones are quite worn, and a rebuilt oil pump.
Good news... I replaced the oil pressure sender unit with a genuine Ford unit and the oil light has stayed off.
The oil presure is still on the low side but the dealer says it is not unusual. May run another 100,000 miles without a rebuild. They recommend using 10W-40 oil rather than the 5W-30 I have been using. I change the oil every 5,000 kilometers (3000 miles).
I hope they are right as I can't afford a rebuild. This vehicle is 20 years old and is my daily driver, not a vintage toy.
