Hi Folks,
The clutch on my 86 2x4 I-6, T-19 is sometimes sticky and has a hard pedal. It seems to have always been so. (110,000 mi.) I want to replace the clutch with an aftermarket unit that will be smoother and easier to push down.
I don't need a massive clutch since I don't haul very much or abuse the thing.
I have heard about LUK. Does anyone have any ideas or recomendations, and tips for replacing the clutch? I see they offer a 10" or 11". Is the flywheel drilled for both?
Thanks,
I've heard of the LUK, but don't have any experience with them. I'm running a Centerforce Dual Friction and love it. No, I don't drag race the truck or even haul that much with it, but the smoothness compared to the stocker leaves no comparison. (I can coast the truck down to idle without getting the jumpiness and bucking that I used to). On the 302's, at least, the flywheel is drilled for both the 10" and 11" clutches. I would guess your I6 would be the same.
Your flywheel is drilled for both patterns, but you will have to resurface it, especially if you change the size. I would also check out the linkage for it, as that might be binding up. I believe that this was the last year for the mechanical linkage. They also had problems if the body mounts go out. Start at the pedal, make sure that the rod through the floor isn't bound up, etc. Also, check the motor mounts, as the Z-bar for the clutch mounts between the frame and the rear of the block.
This truck has the hydraulic system. I have already replaced the master and the slave. The slave broke (exploded!)in the drive way, but the master went out in town. It's a bitch driving without the clutch, but the low first gear makes it easy to start in gear.
I am going to resurface the wheel in any case and change the rear seal and trany seals too, and do the universal joints if I take the thing apart.
