I just purchased a 1982 with a 1985 351w and it is an electrical nightmare. It was running when I got it. Then after driving it around for a day it just wont fire up. It is getting fuel but no spark. I have replaced the coil and ignition module with no success. When I drove it around I had the system checked and they said my alternator wasn't working at all. But it ran fine before that. I have been stumped for awhile and decided before I bought anymore parts I would do some research. I have 12 volts all the way to the coil when the key is in the on postion. Any Ideas?
Billybob69 is right...have the alt. checked out. You can have 12 VDC all the way to the coil but if its only 5 amps worth of 12VDC you won't go ANYWHERE. The 12 volts is easily maintained by the battery until a major load is put on the electrical system for any amount of time. But if the alternator isn't there to generate the 12VDC at the necessary amperage level, you might have enough there to run your model train if you are lucky.
still no luck I had it tested and they said it was good. I'm just not getting any spark im thinking it might be something in the distributor. The rotor doesn't look anything like the three systems in the chiltons book.
Take off the dist cap and have someone watch thew rotor as you crank it....does it turn? If not then prolly timing chain. If it does turn...then start back at the beginning. Trace the power until you find where it doesnt get to.
