Most F-100's from 1953-56 came with a 6.5 foot long bed. If you look at the truck's data plate on the driver's side door sill, you'll see the wheelbase listed, and a 6.5 foot bed truck will have a 110 inch wheelbase. This bed is also narrow, with a 49 inch load width. These trucks are widest across the front fenders, measuring a little over 75 inches. The wheel track is 60 inches wide.
Some F-100's came with the long bed option, which means an 8 foot bed on a 118 inch wheelbase.
Most guys like the looks of the shorter wheelbase, so it is generally more sought after. The hot rod dudes definitely like it better.
But some guys (like me) still haul things and prefer the bigger bed because it's more useful. The long bed on my 56 F-250 has a 54 inch load width. On these trucks the rear fenders are the widest bit and measure 78 inches wide. The wheel track is 62 inches wide. I'm not sure if the F-100's with long beds are also this wide.
Hope this helps, and welcome to FTE. You've found the best place to get info on this trucks....everything from radical rods to bone stock.
